What does "bring your own hard drive" mean?

Last Updated: Oct 22, 2012 04:03PM PDT
Simple.TV is designed to be flexible and is initially targeted at people who love technology. So, we decided to make our first Simple.TV DVRs without hard drives so that you can plug in any size hard drive you like, for as much storage as you like.

Before you can use Simple.TV, you'll need to connect an external hard drive to the box using the built-in USB 2.0 port. During the setup process, we'll take you through erasing and formatting the drive so that it's ready for use by Simple.TV.

Some people have asked if you can "hot swap" drives from one Simple.TV DVR to another, and whether you can take a hard drive formatted for use with Simple.TV and plug it into your computer. This is something that we don't support right now, but we do plan to offer this capability in a future firmware update.
